[edit] About

For our unique architecture to bring continuous joy we need stronger legal protection for buildings per se, a better deployment of local government ... and simply, more public respect and recognition of architecture as an art, as sculpture, as significant.

York university boasts unique and pronounced mid-20th Century architectural contributions, but has hitherto had no society fitting to rave about it. This society does exactly that, but goes beyond it.

There is not an Architecture degree programme offered at York. The absorption of the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies into the Department of Archaeology absented the presence of architectural thought here, saved only by narrow Art History modules and our Conservation MA. The architecture society has been set up to fill this void, and keep discussion and debate of the built environment rife, being an integral part of all our lives.

[edit] What the society does

  • Discuss architecture of all dates and styles
  • Hosts termly lecture series by distinguished visitors in the field
  • Holding trips to sites of architectural brilliance and importance both internationally and closer to home
  • Work as a local lobbying body to help shape the architecture of our future
