York Campus Nursery is located next to the University Medical Centre. It accepts children from all members of the University, including students and staff, occasional conference visitors and members of the public.

[edit] Aims and policies

The Nursery says that it "aims to promote a happy, secure, caring and stimulating environment where the children develop socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. The welfare of the child is paramount."

Its policy is that "the management of children's behaviour, while under the care of the Nursery, will not include smacking, slapping or shaking or any punishment intended to humiliate or frighten a child."


The Nursery is able to take a maximum of 30 children between the ages of two and five years and nine children aged three months to two years in the Baby Unit. The Nursery has an average staff : child ratio of 1 : 6. The Baby Unit has a ratio of 1 : 3.

  • Morning: 8.30am to 1.30pm
  • Afternoon: 1.30pm to 6.00pm

Parents must complete a registration form for each child that requires a place at the Nursery. Each child is then entered onto the waiting list and admitted as soon as a place becomes available.

Priority on the waiting list is given to existing users, siblings of existing users and then new children, in date order.

When a child is offered a place, the parents will be invited to visit the Nursery with them and can stay while they settle in.

For the children of staff, graduate students and members of the public, Nursery fees are based on a 50-week year. A discount of 50% of the normal weekly fees is be available for a maximum of four weeks holiday during which the child does not attend the nursery. 4 weeks notice is required to book holidays.

For the children of undergraduate students, fees will be based on a 37-week year. Places may be retained at a cost of 20% of the full cost over the whole summer vacation.

SESSIONS There is a minimum booking requirement of two sessions per week. In the first instance, it may not always be possible to offer you every session you require due to demand for places. As and when addition places become available, the Manager will inform you.

Enquiries about the Nursery should be directed to the Nursery Manager, Ruth Mellard. She is available from 2 pm to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, or at other times by arrangement.

Other enquiries should be directed to Liz Paxman, an administrator. She is in the office from 9 am to 1 pm.
