[edit] History

Derwent was the first college to be opened at the University. The official opening was performed by Queen Elizabeth II on 22nd October 1965.

[edit] Structure

The college is home to around 250 undergraduates, who are spread between six accommodation blocks (‘A’ to ‘F’). Blocks A-D are made of prefabricated concrete blocks and panels. E and F are part of the Derwent-Langwith extension (or 'Derwith'), built in the late 1980s to exactly the same specification as the older James College blocks. Some rooms in the extension blocks are en-suite.

Derwent College houses the Politics and Philosophy departments. Facilities include Da Vinci restaurant and Doodles Burger Bar.

Eden's Court is a cluster of houses situated on Main Street, Heslington, some 5 minutes' walk from the college nucleus. Students resident in Eden's Court are members of Derwent College, and elect their own representative to the Derwent College JCRC.

[edit] Staff

The Provost is Dr. Ron Weir (rbw1@york.ac.uk) and the College Secretary is Mrs. Christina Unwin (clu1@york.ac.uk).

[edit] Events

Derwent JCRC organise the event 'Club D' three times a term. 'Big D' is an annual event, held on the final Thursday of summer term. Big D utilises Derwent Bar and Langwith Old Dining Hall as venues for live acts, with the grassy area between the colleges fenced off and used for outdoor entertainments including bouncy castles, food vans, bucking broncos, etc.

[edit] Alumni

Greg Dyke and Harry Enfield are among the college’s alumni. Previous chairpersons have included the current YUSU President [Rich Croker] (2004-5) and HRH [Ben Youdan] (1999-2000).
