[edit] Teaching and assessment

The Department specialises in small group teaching. Every undergraduate module, from first year to third, has as its focus a small seminar group meeting once or twice a week. Seminars are complemented by tutorials, which are normally on a one-to-one basis. The emphasis in assessment is on essays written in the student's own time rather than closed examinations.

A unique feature of the department's teaching and research is the study of literature in a number of other languages; these include French, German, Spanish, Italian, Latin, Old Norse, and Anglo-Saxon. The Department has a special interest in colonial and postcolonial literature, including Irish, African, Caribbean, and Latin American. Film is studied as an integral element in the undergraduate course, with opportunities to specialise at the final level.

[edit] Postgraduates

A high proportion of York graduate students go on to do MPhil/PhD research in the Department. Many are successful in attracting AHRC funding for professional research.

The Department has an exceptionally large and lively graduate community, with about 130 students studying for MA, MPhil, and PhD degrees. Students come from many countries around the world. See http://www.york.ac.uk/depts/engl/gsp/graduate_study_info.htm for more information.
