The History Department is one of the original departments of the University. It is primarily located in Vanbrugh College, but staff are also located at King's Manor (home of the inter-disciplinary centres for Medieval Studies, Renaissance and Early Modern Studies, and Eighteenth Century Studies), and the National Railway Museum, where the Institute of Railway Studies and Transport History is located.
