[edit] Aims
The University of York Christian Union (UYCU) exists to help Christian students grow in their faith and to share it with other people on campus. Every event that is put on is open to everyone and a friendly welcome is to be expected.
[edit] Activities
The Christian Union organises Bible study groups, Christian events, prayer meetings and social action projects that are open to all members of the University, irrespective of membership of the society. Other UYCU-run events include open discussions of potentially controversial topics over a free lunch. In previous years UYCU with the help of York St. John's Christian Union have hosted the Minster Ball, held at York Minster. The society also publishes a guide for freshers called ‘Don’t Panic’, which can be found through the website. There is an emphasis on social action, notably with the Street Project when, on Monday and Friday nights, members of the Christian Union pray together before going onto the streets taking food, hot drinks and warm clothing to give to the homeless people they meet.
College Christian Union groups meet every week to study the Bible together, discuss issues about Christianity, pray with and encourage each other, and are open to everyone at the university.
[edit] People
Every member of UYCU is greatly valued and contributes to the running of it. It is an active society, with many members in different colleges helping to serve campus in whatever way they can.
UYCU is headed up by co-presidents - one male, one female - and these change annually. The posts are currently held by Joe Marshall and Hester Mccurdy. They're always up for meeting people and are contactable through socs25@york.ac.uk
Other people help run Bible study groups in colleges, others organise events and projects to help tell people about Jesus Christ, others help with the running of the saturday main meeting through being on the welcome team, the PA team or playing music. There's many, many other ways people get involved in the running of UYCU.
The CU is affiliated to the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF) and works closely with churches in York and the university chaplains, who provide valuable support and speakers for some events.
