York Vision is one of two student newspapers at the University of York. It is tabloid in size and design but articles are written in a more serious tone than national red-tops. It comes out three times a term and is printed by York Country Press. Vision is funded by YUSU, who give the paper a grant each year to cover their costs. Censorship of the paper by YUSU is in line with the Media Charter, which includes the right to remove any articles which affect student welfare or university security. The paper was established in 1987.

[edit] Recent Changes

In 2002 Vision relaunched itself as a popular tabloid under then editor Rob Harris. The paper became heavily influenced by The Mirror and adopted loud, aggressive front pages. The changes began an unprecedented run of success for Vision, as it became the only student newspaper ever to win the Guardian Media Award for best newspaper 3 years in a row.

In 2006 the new editorial decided it was time for change again. Influenced by high-level design input in newspapers such as The Guardian, the team decided to try begin the first "designer tabloid". In an attempt to make the newspaper more tabloid the team dropped the arts section out of the paper and launched it in a new magazine called "The Scene". Changes also included removing all national news reporting, shutting down the "Politics" section, and pushing forward a hard news and features agenda. The most radical change was the launching of "Lifestyle", a new section which was unashamedly populist in features and news in areas such as fashion, sex, food and drink. The Vision sports team began publishing the first ever tactics board in student journalism, accompanied with a 50 team scoreboard.

Vision currently comprises of five sections. They are: News, Comment, Features, Lifestyle and Sport. Inside every paper is a square magazine called "The Scene". The Scene includes: Spotlight, Music, Film, Culture, Books, TV and Listings.
