Yorkipedia:Switching License
From Yorkipedia
The short version:
- If article is small enough to rewrite it in one go, just erase the lot and start again.
- Otherwise select move and add "/cc" to the end of the article name, using "license switch" as the reason.
- In the /cc version, replace "
{{Ccancsa}}" with "{CcRewritten}}". - Edit and replace the redirect page under the original name with "
{{ccoriginal}}" followed by the rewrite. - When you happy with the rewrite, replace the "
{{ccoriginal}}" with "{{Rewrite}}".

[edit] Rewriting existing articles
See Yorkipedia:Switching License/Test Page for an example of the following instructions.
The process for rewriting articles is as follows:
- If the article is small just rewrite it if you didn't originally write it, and remove the "
{{ccancsa}}" line at the top. Otherwise: - Move the article adding "/cc" to the article name (this is important for the next step), and using "license switch" for the reason. This will replace the original page with a simple redirect to the moved page.
- Replace the redirect with a new rewritten article. When the redirect is followed it will have a link at the top to where you were redirected from. Use this to get to the redirect page.
- Put a line with "
{{ccoriginal}}" at the top to display a short note that the article is being rewritten and to link to the original ({{ccoriginal}}makes use of the "/cc" postfix naming convention). When the article has been rewritten beyond the original this note can be removed. - Some of the existing articles can be easily identified as having been copied verbatim from Wikipedia. This was actually in violation of the GNU Free Documentation license that Wikipedia uses. This is because the GNU Free Documentation license does not allow extra restrictions to be imposed on the content, and the Creative Commons license imposes restrictions regarding commercial use that the GNU Free Documentation License does not have. Because the new article will be under the GNU Free Documentation License also, such verbatim copying from Wikipedia will be permitted.
[edit] Where to find articles that need rewriting
- Most linked to articles - A good place to start as these are more likely to be viewed.
- Articles under Creative Commons - Category containing all articles that need rewriting.
- Articles being rewritten - Category containing articles which are in the process of being rewritten.
[edit] The boring stuff
Yorkipedia is in the process of switching licenses from the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 License to the GNU Free Documentation License which is used by Wikipedia. This is to allow content to be exchanged verbatim with Wikipedia.
Because the previous content of the Yorkipedia has been contributed under the terms of the Creative Commons License, it has to stay under that license (because of the 'ShareAlike' part) therefore these articles need rewriting. If you contributed your own content before the switch, then because you own the copyright you can recontribute it under the GNU Free Documentation License.
Any articles under the Creative Commons License have a message at the top stating this and are in the Articles under Creative Commons category. New articles are under the GNU Free Documentation License.
